Strategic Alignment

The Client
A long-established, member-owned financial services institution with continued financial stability and strong market presence, navigating a steadily expanding portfolio of digital and technology-enabled initiatives.
The Situation
Strategy existed on paper, presentations and a growing list of initiatives, but lacked a shared logic leadership could consistently reference. Discussions kept revisiting the same questions. Priorities were interpreted differently across functions, and trade-offs stayed implicit rather than decided. Alignment depended on individual relationships rather than a shared strategic frame.
The Challenge
Strategy wasn't explicit enough to support real trade-offs
Leadership conversations defaulted to lists of initiatives rather than directional choices
Cross-divisional disagreements persisted without a shared reference point
The result was extended meetings, limited decision-making, and rising frustration, not from a lack of commitment or effort, but from leadership lacking a shared strategy they could actually use to guide difficult choices.
What We Did
We supported the leadership team in building a Strategy Blueprint, reframing strategy from a collection of initiatives into a small number of explicit choices that required confronting real trade-offs. The executive team moved through a structured process that centered on the organization's most pressing strategic challenge, brought difficult choices into the open, surfaced underlying assumptions and tested their validity, and constrained the result to a concise, near single-page articulation.
The Results
Clear strategic priorities grounded in explicit choices
Stronger alignment across the leadership team
More focused, productive strategic discussions
A shared reference point for decision-making
Improved confidence in direction and trade-offs
The Strategic Choice Charter became a living foundation for execution, not a static artifact.
Role and Approach
We acted as strategic facilitator, challenger, trainer, and executive coach, with a deliberate emphasis on building internal capability rather than creating dependency. The objective was never to own the strategy, but to help the leadership team build the confidence and discipline to make, test, and live with meaningful strategic choices.
